Spring Hill Farm Breeder of
Murray Grey Beef Cattle
Murray Grey Beef Cattle
Murray Grey is a breed of beef cattle hailing from the Murray River valley in Australia. The breed originated from a cross between a Shorthorn cow and an Aberdeen Angus bull in the early 1900s. The breed is naturally polled and is known for its gentle temperament, ease of calving, excellent maternal instincts and efficient weight gain on grass, with carcass traits of high marbling and tenderness. In most cases calves are born ranging from light to dark grey, losing their grey as they grow and developing a coat that can be a variety of brown or black. A few adults may even have an almost silver appearance. In our experience, we've had grey calves and also one born completely white and one born with a black coat.
We started our herd, which is pastured year round, with three heifers in 2020. They're rotationally grazed spring through fall, moving onto fresh grass every three days. In the winter they get hay cut from our own farm. They never receive a daily grain ration, but do get a handful of non-GMO grain & molasses a few times during the year to keep them bucket trained.
